GRATITUDE.......

This morning, I awoke to find a dense fog enveloping everything around me, reminiscent of the current state of America. Despite this, I felt a profound sense of calm and gratitude for my home and its surroundings. Just as the fog around my home eventually will lift, so too will the fog over America.

The splendor of my surroundings is truly breathtaking. Regardless of where one resides, there is always something to appreciate and be thankful for.

Architectual History San Miguel de Allende

Throughout my travels across the United States, I've been captivated by the diverse architectural histories of various locales. Architecture serves as a tangible narrative of a civilization's evolution, reflecting its cultural, technological, and societal shifts over time. By studying architectural history, we gain insights into how different societies have developed unique building styles and methods, which in turn illuminate broader aspects of human civilization. Now that I live in San Miguel I feel the same regarding their architectural history.

The construction of the Parish Church of San Miguel Arcángel in San Miguel de Allende commenced shortly after Fray Juan de San Miguel founded the town of San Miguel el Grande in 1542. Overlooking  the center of town called the El Jardin Plaza.

Between 1680 and 1690, the Parish of San Miguel Arcángel fell into disrepair, prompting a second reconstruction that concluded in 1709. At that time, the church did not exhibit the vertical style seen today; instead, it was designed in the Spanish Plateresque architectural style, which emerged during the Spanish Renaissance as an evolution from medieval Gothic—the predominant architectural style of the Spanish Empire and the Catholic Monarchs during the early colonization of America.

The architectural history of Mexico offers profound insights into its culture. A notable example is the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel in San Miguel de Allende. Residents emphasize that this iconic structure is a parish, not a cathedral, because the town lacks a bishop. Therefore, its correct designation is the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel.

The Mexican people are deeply committed to their faith, a devotion vividly displayed during spiritual holidays such as the celebration of the Virgin of Guadalupe. This profound faith serves as a cornerstone in their lives, providing strength and guidance through various challenges. Similarly, embracing faith—however one defines it—can help us navigate both daily experiences and broader worldly events. For me, gratitude for my life in San Miguel is a sustaining force.

Adios until next time from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
